New records of Lagidium cf. L. wolffsohni (Thomas, 1907) (Rodentia, Chinchillidae) in southern Chile

Wolffsohn’s viscacha may live much further north in Chile than any previous record shows. Of the 3 viscacha species present in Chile, it has the most restricted distribution in South America, known only from Aysén and Magallanes. We assessed photographic records from Puyehue National Park and from Huinay, in the Los Lagos Region.
The records, if confirmed, would extend the species’ northern distribution by 722 km. Because the evidence is photographic, the paper proposes the species’ potential presence rather than confirming it.

Of the three species of viscachas present in Chile, Wolffsohn’s viscacha Lagidium wolffsohni (Rodentia: Chichillidae) is the one with the most restricted distribution in South America, being found only in the regions of Aysén and Magallanes, in the extreme south of the country. Based on photographic records, we propose its potential presence in Puyehue National Park and Huinay, Hualaihué Commune, Los Lagos Region, southern Chile. These records would expand the species’ northern distribution by 722 km.
